Social media may get a bad reputation for all the negativity that get shared, but social media had change the animal adoption world. Shelters use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram because people are addicted to social media. They though it would a good idea to use the addiction for a positive cause. Photos of cute dogs and cats seem irresistible to people who are always checking their social media accounts.
Since the shelters started social media campaigns, the average length of time a cat or dog stays in the shelter has reduced by 75%. Viewer tag an animal that interests them and then the shelter encourages them to stop by for a visit. Before long, they are a new happy family. Special events are promoted through social media, such as Petapalooza and these events bring in hundreds of people and hundreds of animals are adopted in an 8 hour time frame.
Another positive effect social media has on shelters is low cost fundraising. There are multiple ways for people to donate using social media with little or no cost to the shelter. For example, a friend could donate money on your behalf instead of giving you a birthday present.
There is one downside. Animals with special needs often don't photograph well. However, if you meet them in person, their lovable nature might win you over. So in this case, social media might prevent people from visit special needs animals.
