Activism and Social Media

The cause that I choose to support is the ALS Association. ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease because of the famous baseball player that died from it. This cause is very important to me because my grandma is currently battling it. The ALS Association does a great job using social media to share information with people recently diagnosed, families living with the disease, and caregivers. They share new research and provide links to local support groups. They promote events that rise money and awareness, such as the Walk to Defeat ALS. They have a team challenge, corporate options, and family group for the race. The association shares instructions on creative ways families can raise money through social media to help care for there loved ones. They also share information about local community support. There is a daily blog posted by health professionals and social workers with advice. http://www.alsa.org/       Facts for

Suddenly, a Knock on the Door

1. What is your reaction to the text you just read? This story is very weird, and it feels unfinished. I don't know why the 3 men were demanding a story from the writer. Also, I don't understand the story he finally told. The only thing I do understand is that he seemed to want to tell a story based on the reality of the situation. 2. What connections did you make with the story? Discuss the elements of the work with which you were able to connect. I usually like to connect with a character in the story but I didn't connect with anyone in this story. I think the characters are suppose to symbolize different political or cultural groups, but I really didn't understand. I would normally connect with the way the guy might feel if the gun was pointed at you, but I would be afraid but this guy wasn't.  3. What changes would you make to adapt this story into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would you make? I would adapt this story into a c

Zombies Everywhere: week 13

Image
The Walking Dead is my favorite graphic novel novel and long from TV series. There are over 50 zombie related graphic novel series available now. Some are based of serious literature, such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies , but other are futuristic, such as Zombies vs. Robots, and others are based on traditional comic book such are Marvel Zombies . Since Zombies have become part of our entertainment culture, I would curate a zombie unit as a part of the course. Writer Robert Kirkman and writer Tony Moore first published The Walking Dead in 2003, and it won the Eisner Award in 2007 and 2010 for best continuing series at San Diego Comic Con. The series was inspired by Night of the Living Dead from the 1960s. The long form TV series began in 2011 and was based on the graphic novel. The main character is Rick Grimes, sheriff's deputy from Georgia who comes out of a coma to find the world overrun by zombies, he becomes the leader of the survivors and the protagonist. The graphic

Social Media and shelter animals

Social Media Changes the Lives of  Shelter Cats & Dogs Social media may get a bad reputation for all the negativity that get shared, but social media had change the animal adoption world. Shelters use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram because people are addicted to social media. They though it would a good idea to use the addiction for a positive cause. Photos of cute dogs and cats seem irresistible to people who are always checking their social media accounts. Since the shelters started social media campaigns, the average length of time a cat or dog stays in the shelter has reduced by 75%. Viewer tag an animal that interests them and then the shelter encourages them to stop by for a visit. Before long, they are a new happy family. Special events are promoted through social media, such as Petapalooza and these events bring in hundreds of people and hundreds of animals are adopted in an 8 hour time frame. Another positive effect social media has on shelters i

Long Form Television Questions/13 Reasons Why

Long Form Television Group: Alaura, Brandon, Linda, Selina    What is television?    It is a form of entertainment to pass time, it's not a necessity but is something that is an escape.  It is also for communicating ideas, bringing people together, selling products through commercials and depending on if you are poor or rich, storytelling for characters and situations, personal expression like animation and music. Another form is live television and news channels, knowing information about the world and politics and reality TV that go through everyday life and explain whats either going on with a specific person or location. This can also be applied to documentaries.  What is different of long form television?  After the 2000s, television series started to get very popular and more widely used.  Sometimes it can be used to have adaptions of multiple books and even graphic novels. Studios are fairly different and reused. Characters and places are repetitive. Also unlike most m

my favorite thing is Monsters

Emil Ferris started writing My Favorite Thing is Monsters when she was 40 year old and paralyzed. After reading a little bit of the book I started wondering what was the purpose of writing the book. I did some research about the background of why she wrote the story and I was pretty impressed. After she was paralyzed, she lost all mobility in her right hand so she had to reteach herself how to write and draw all with her left hand. That shows a lot of dedication to what she loves, to go through a tragic event like she did and still wanting to overcome from that and to get back of what she loves to do, that's pretty badass! The main character is Karen who is a young girl that seem autobiographical. She is about 10 years old and is obsessed with monsters. The book was around 400 pages long but it was very easy to read. The story had a lot of plots and sub-plots but they all involved monsters. She was influenced by the older black and white monster movies such as the characters Fran

Jacques Tati

The 3 films by Jacques Tati I have chosen to watch are Mr. Hulot's Holiday (1953), My Uncle (1958) and Playtime (1967). In all three films Jacques Tati plays the same character Mr. Hulot who is a lovable, simple guy who seems to cause chaos wherever he goes. In the first film Mr. Hulot's Holiday, he goes to the beach on vacation. This film is in black and white and does not have the modern buildings that are in the other films. Also Tati seems to be poking fun at the people and their snobby behavior rather than their home or office like in the other two films. One of the strangest things in all three films is the soundtrack. Most movies have some type of music to play in the background, but these films really focus more on the sound effects rather than having music playing in the background. For example, in Playtime when he is walking around the lobby of the office, you hear the sound of the traffic outside and then a weird buzzing sound. Every now and then you hear the chair
