Cosmopolis

Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo is a novel and a movie about a really rich guy who goes across town in his limo for a haircut. Alone the way, he meets all kinds of strange people from different backgrounds. 

The topic for this week is the idea of privilege. From the setting of the story, we assume the main character is very rich. Most of us assume that rich people feel privilege. However, the people that he meets alone the way aren't all rich and the barber shop he is going to is not in a rich neighborhood. He wife does seem very rich. The problem is that he is losing all his money and his mind. His life seems empty and his is trying to fill the void with things like meaningless sex. His actions become more careless and desperate. He doesn't want people to know that his that desperate. The story seems more about power than privilege but maybe or the rich people are the ones in power.

It was pretty cool to hear S J Sindu talk about her novel and the story behind it. I thought was interesting to see how different gay people are accepted in her culture. Their challenges gay people faced in our country 30 years ago. It was an easy story to read, and she did a good job describing the scenes. In the movie, it was interesting to see how the director brought the scenes to life. I understand that she wanted to leave the story somewhat open and to leave you to make your own assumption of what could happen but for me I wish there was some kind of an ending to have some kind of closer to what happened.

Shelters use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram because people are addicted to social media. They though it would a good idea to use the addiction for a positive cause. Photos of cute dogs and cats seem irresistible to people who are always checking their social media accounts. Since the shelters started social media campaigns, the average length of time a cat or dog stays in the shelter has reduced by 75%. Viewer tag an animal that interests them and then the shelter encourages them to stop by for a visit. Before long, they are a new happy family. Jacques Tati

The 3 films by Jacques Tati I have chosen to watch are Mr. Hulot's Holiday (1953), My Uncle (1958) and Playtime (1967). In all three films Jacques Tati plays the same character Mr. Hulot who is a lovable, simple guy who seems to cause chaos wherever he goes. In the first film Mr. Hulot's Holiday, he goes to the beach on vacation. This film is in black and white and does not have the modern buildings that are in the other films. Also Tati seems to be poking fun at the people and their snobby behavior rather than their home or office like in the other two films. One of the strangest things in all three films is the soundtrack. Most movies have some type of music to play in the background, but these films really focus more on the sound effects rather than having music playing in the background.
