my favorite thing is Monsters

Emil Ferris started writing My Favorite Thing is Monsters when she was 40 year old and paralyzed. After reading a little bit of the book I started wondering what was the purpose of writing the book. I did some research about the background of why she wrote the story and I was pretty impressed. After she was paralyzed, she lost all mobility in her right hand so she had to reteach herself how to write and draw all with her left hand. That shows a lot of dedication to what she loves, to go through a tragic event like she did and still wanting to overcome from that and to get back of what she loves to do, that's pretty badass! The main character is Karen who is a young girl that seem autobiographical. She is about 10 years old and is obsessed with monsters. The book was around 400 pages long but it was very easy to read. The story had a lot of plots and sub-plots but they all involved monsters. She was influenced by the older black and white monster movies such as the characters Fran...

Jacques Tati

The 3 films by Jacques Tati I have chosen to watch are Mr. Hulot's Holiday (1953), My Uncle (1958) and Playtime (1967). In all three films Jacques Tati plays the same character Mr. Hulot who is a lovable, simple guy who seems to cause chaos wherever he goes. In the first film Mr. Hulot's Holiday, he goes to the beach on vacation. This film is in black and white and does not have the modern buildings that are in the other films. Also Tati seems to be poking fun at the people and their snobby behavior rather than their home or office like in the other two films. One of the strangest things in all three films is the soundtrack. Most movies have some type of music to play in the background, but these films really focus more on the sound effects rather than having music playing in the background. For example, in Playtime when he is walking around the lobby of the office, you hear the sound of the traffic outside and then a weird buzzing sound. Every now and then you hear the chair...

Interview With A Vampire

I chose to use Interview with the Vampire for this assignment. The screenplay/novel was written by Ann Rice,  and I enjoy stories that are dark and scary. The film was directed by Neil Jordan, and he created a dark but beautiful version of the story from the 18th century. If I had a job helping to bring this screenplay to life, I would be the set designer. This would allow me to bring my love of art to the film. The 3 main settings are New Orleans, Paris and Eastern Europe and the time period is the late 1700s. The biggest challenge will be all the scenes will have to be at night or inside, so the lighting will have to be bright enough to show the action but dark enough to look like night time. The screenplay creates images of beautiful settings in the mind of the reader, but I thought the settings in the film were gross and dirty. In the paragraph below, I will describe my set designs. New Orleans is similar to Paris in style and architecture, but instead of it being dirty, I w...
