Interview With A Vampire

I chose to use Interview with the Vampire for this assignment. The screenplay/novel was written by Ann Rice,  and I enjoy stories that are dark and scary. The film was directed by Neil Jordan, and he created a dark but beautiful version of the story from the 18th century. If I had a job helping to bring this screenplay to life, I would be the set designer. This would allow me to bring my love of art to the film. The 3 main settings are New Orleans, Paris and Eastern Europe and the time period is the late 1700s. The biggest challenge will be all the scenes will have to be at night or inside, so the lighting will have to be bright enough to show the action but dark enough to look like night time. The screenplay creates images of beautiful settings in the mind of the reader, but I thought the settings in the film were gross and dirty. In the paragraph below, I will describe my set designs.

New Orleans is similar to Paris in style and architecture, but instead of it being dirty, I would make it look hard and inviting. For example, in both locations there would be a cafe in the Paris style with little tables and chairs outside. I would have golden light coming from inside the cafe so you could see the faces of the actors seated outside. I would also make use of the upper balcony style with lots of plants and greenery so Claudia could play outside in a park like setting, even though its nigh time.

In Paris, I would use the newly opened Louvre museum (opened in late 1700s) for the scenes where Louis and Lestat teach Claudia about art and culture. These indoor scenes would capture the beauty of the art and the interior lighting so the vampires would be protected.

Eastern Europe is the setting for a sad part of the story, I would use the dark streets and caverns of Transylvania to reflect the mood. The lighting would be from candles and torches so the actors faces would be in the shadows. It would shot in the fall/winter when the weather is grey.

For the setting in current times during the interview, I would use in old New Orleans mansion thats kinda run down. The lighting would be bright from inside one room in the house, but the room for the interview would be lit with only candles. The wall and curtains would be white with nothing on the walls. There would be no beauty in the house at all.
