my favorite thing is Monsters
Emil Ferris started writing My Favorite Thing is Monsters when she was 40 year old and paralyzed. After reading a little bit of the book I started wondering what was the purpose of writing the book. I did some research about the background of why she wrote the story and I was pretty impressed. After she was paralyzed, she lost all mobility in her right hand so she had to reteach herself how to write and draw all with her left hand. That shows a lot of dedication to what she loves, to go through a tragic event like she did and still wanting to overcome from that and to get back of what she loves to do, that's pretty badass!
The main character is Karen who is a young girl that seem autobiographical. She is about 10 years old and is obsessed with monsters. The book was around 400 pages long but it was very easy to read. The story had a lot of plots and sub-plots but they all involved monsters. She was influenced by the older black and white monster movies such as the characters Frankenstein, Werewolf and Dracula also living Chicago in the time of the 60's and 70's also plays a big role in some of the events that happen in the story and also the scenery of the illustrations the she draws out for us. One of the interesting plots of the story would be trying to figure out the murder of her neighbor. Another interesting element would be the way she expresses and illustrate Karen's feelings for Missy. Early in the story, Karen turns into a werewolf and she dreams of a monster biting her so she will die and come back as a perfect immortal human being. I makes you thing if she envisions herself as a monster in real life because of what she has been through. The illustrations seemed directly tied to her personal life and it makes you wonder how much emotion went into writing this story.
I really enjoyed this story. I recommend this story to readers who have a great interest into monsters, horror and a murder mystery.
