Suddenly, a Knock on the Door

1. What is your reaction to the text you just read?

This story is very weird, and it feels unfinished. I don't know why the 3 men were demanding a story from the writer. Also, I don't understand the story he finally told. The only thing I do understand is that he seemed to want to tell a story based on the reality of the situation.

2. What connections did you make with the story? Discuss the elements of the work with which you were able to connect.

I usually like to connect with a character in the story but I didn't connect with anyone in this story. I think the characters are suppose to symbolize different political or cultural groups, but I really didn't understand. I would normally connect with the way the guy might feel if the gun was pointed at you, but I would be afraid but this guy wasn't. 

3. What changes would you make to adapt this story into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would you make?

I would adapt this story into a comic that would be printed near the international news in print or online. I think it should be in black and white because it's so serious. I would add an ending to the story.

True Grit

In True Grit by Charles Portis, this story is an unusual western because its told from the point of view of a 14 year old girl who seems smarter than all the other characters. However, she needs help to get justice for her father's murder. More westerns create a myth of the old west with a hero that is a cowboy who is supposed to be a good guy. In this story, Rooster Cogburn is US Marshall, and Mattie wants to hire him to capture Tom Chaney and bring him to trial. However, Rooster don't fit the typical western hero. when Mattie first meets him he is still a bit drunk from the night before. He also only agrees to help Mattie for the money. As the story goes on, Mattie tries to remind in charge and Rooster keeps his grumpy character going. However, you can tell Rooster is beginning to respect and like Mattie because she is so spunky.
